A major tragedy unfolded in Delhi’s Mehrauli area after a five-storey building collapsed in Saidulajab yesterday, leaving two people dead and several others injured, while rescue teams continued operations through the night amid fears that more people could have been trapped under the debris. The collapse triggered panic in the densely populated locality, with emergency responders racing against time to pull survivors out from the wreckage.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site on Sunday and reviewed the ongoing rescue efforts as authorities intensified search operations in the Mehrauli police station area. The incident has also put the spotlight back on unauthorised and structurally unsafe buildings across the national capital.

“Action will be taken against all such unauthorised buildings and the responsible officers,” she said.

The Chief Minister directed officials to conduct inspections of vulnerable and dilapidated structures in nearby areas and ordered immediate corrective measures wherever required. A criminal case has also been registered at Mehrauli Police Station in connection with the collapse.

Also, a magisterial inquiry would be conducted under the supervision of the South District Magistrate to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.

Death toll rises, several critical

According to hospital authorities, 10 injured people were brought to the AIIMS Trauma Centre after the collapse. Two victims were declared dead on arrival, while three others remain in critical condition. The remaining injured persons are undergoing treatment and are currently under medical observation.

The building collapse caused chaos in the locality as rescue teams worked continuously to clear debris and search for possible survivors.

Massive rescue operation

DCP South Delhi district Anant Mittal said police teams reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the collapse.

He stated that an old structure had collapsed, with debris crashing onto another section below where a canteen used by medical students was reportedly operating. Authorities feared that several individuals could have been trapped inside at the time of the incident.

Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Delhi Fire Services and Delhi Police, launched a joint rescue mission at the site.

Rescue teams continued combing through the debris for several hours as authorities assessed the stability of nearby structures and monitored the possibility of further collapses.
